Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, 30, and Peter Saarsgard, 36, have been steadily dating since 2002. They initially met at a dinner party in 2001, and soon became close acquaintances. Friendship quickly grew into a close and serious relationship; it wasn't long before they were sharing thoughts, aspirations, and even a residence.
In 2003, the duo costarred together in Steven Soderbergh's production of In God's Hands. The low-budget feature film was never released. A few years later, Saarsgard played alongside Gyllenhaal's baby brother, Jake, in the hit motion pictures: Jarhead and Rendition. He was also busy starring in Flightplan, The Skeleton Key, and Kinsey. Around the same time, Gyllenhaal was taking on roles in Stranger than Fiction, World Trade Center, and Mona Lisa Smile. Although they were both intensely occupied in their careers, they still managed to find time for one another.
In April, 2006, the happy pair announced that were engaged and expecting a baby. Family, friends, and fellow actors were excited for the couple who had been discussing potential marriage plans since 2005. Gyllenhaal told Los Angeles Daily News that her and Saarsgard would tie the knot “at some point,” however, at this stage, there were no official plans as of yet. It seemed that the couple wanted to commit 100% of their focus to the pregnancy.
“I certainly will take some break,” Gyllenhaal declares. “But I'm really trying not to anticipate what it will be like to have a newborn baby. I have no idea, and I'm going to wait and see how it feels, really make decisions when I know more about being a mother than I know now.”
The actress certainly has a lot going on. Right up until the pregnancy, Gyllenhaal was still pulling out the stops for her roles in Sherrybaby and the indie drama, Trust the Man. Saarsgard was just finishing up Year of the Dog with Molly Shannon and The Mysteries of Pittsburgh opposite Sienna Miller. The workaholic couple was due a much-needed break.
Their new baby, Ramona, was born on October 3, 2006. An insider revealed that the baby was a healthy 8 pounds, 6 ounces. When asked about what the experience was like for her, Gyllenhaal replied, “As much as I tried to imagine what pregnancy would be like, it's totally different. It's blown my mind every step of the way.”
Now that the birth has come and gone, everyone is quietly anticipating the Saarsgard-Gyllenhaal wedding. Gyllenhaal, still recovering physically from the pregnancy, is in no rush to tie the knot. “We don't want to just go to City Hall. I want the fairy-tale. I've had so many different incarnations of my fantasy wedding dress.” It seems that the actress has big plans for the nuptials. In the meantime, she spends her days attending to Ramona and learning all the ways of motherhood. Perhaps we'll see their names in the wedding headlines this upcoming summer.
