Any professional wedding planner will tell you that the overall success of any party relies heavily on the details. It's not about having 5-star cuisine or spending a ton of money on floral arrangements – while these things can help add to a wedding reception, they can be extremely expensive. Don't waste your time or money looking for the biggest and most extravagant elements; instead, maximize the aestheticism of the party through small touches.
Wedding planner specialist, Tara Guerard loves to integrate couple's color scheme into fashionable and eye-pleasing décor elements. She takes nothing for granted, individualizing the party from the powder room sinks all the way to the dance floor. Her goal is to have guests leave the party saying, “This is the most fun I've ever had at a party.” (Elegant Bride) Adopt this same philosophy as you plan your own wedding. What constituents could you impart to the wedding reception and ceremony that would help your guests have a wonderful time?
Guests are impressed when they see things that they've never seen before. It could be as small as serving unusual desserts such as chocolate-covered Key Lime-pie Popsicles, to giving the bridesmaids personalized necklaces. Replace all of the bathroom pump hand-soaps with soap bars that are monogrammed with yours and the groom's initials. Above all else, make sure that these small signature touches coordinate with your wedding colors. This will pull the entire theme together and give the party a striking quality.
Colors are important because with them, you can really make a room pop. Instead of covering the tables with plain white tablecloths, upgrade to customized colored linens. Imagine a pink, blue and green checkerboard cover for your green and pink wedding. If you're having the wedding outdoors in a vineyard or golf course, make sure that you use a nice contrasting color such as fuchsia or lavender. If there is a pool or fountain at the wedding reception venue, a cool idea is to cover a couple beach balls with flowers and float them in the water during the party. The effect is absolutely enchanting, as well as highly contemporary.
Instead of having flowers as your centerpieces, you could utilize medium-sized bare-branched trees. From these you could hang cool designs and flowers tied with ribbons that match your wedding décor. Place some orchids, white peonies, and green viburnum down at the base of each tree. For a more magical effect, you could surround each tree with cream-colored candles. Get your wedding guests involved with the reception by having them write personalized messages on small note cards which match your color scheme. You could then have them hang these on one of the many “wishing trees.”
Have a candy bar. If executed correctly, these could really add to the party. Choose a small variety of different sweets that match your wedding color scheme. Stick with candy that is mess-free, such as gum balls and jelly beans. Fill a few tall cylindrical glass bowls with these sweets, and place a stainless steel scooper in each one. You could position the bowls around the cake for ultimate effect. You may also consider having monogrammed mini-cupcakes which you can set next to the candy bar on a tiered tray.
